يحكى الدكتور توفيق الشاوى فى
مذكراته الذاتية أن بعثته الدراسية كانت فى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وبعد أن
استعد للبعثة ذهب يزور أستاذه البنا، وأخبره بشأن ابتعاثه، فاقترح عليه الأستاذ
البنا أن يغير اتجاه البعثة من أمريكا إلى فرنسا، وأخبره أننا نحتاجك فى فرنسا
لمساعدة مجتمعات المجاهدين هناك، والذين يحاولون أن ينظموا أنفسهم، ثم طلب منه بعد
ذلك أن يلتقى هناك بالمجاهد الكبير شكيب أرسلان، وكان هذا ما تم وذهب الشاوى إلى
فرنسا، وقام بدور متميز فى الإعداد لتحرير الشمال الأفريقى.
وعندما
عاد الشاوى إلى مصر ودخل السجن عام 54 لم يخرجه من السجن إلا رجاء الإخوة
المجاهدين الجزائريين والمغاربة إلى الرئيس عبد الناصر بالإفراج عنه لحاجتهم
الماسة إلى جهوده، وخرج الشاوى من السجن إلى المغرب، حيث ظل يكافح مع إخوانه، حتى
تحررت الجزائر، وكان يسكن فى بيت واحد مع بن بيلا، ومحمد خيضر، وآخرين.
